Please forward this email to school districts and charter schools in your county.
The purpose of this email is to notify you that the California Department of Education (CDE) has sent an apportionment to the State Controller’s Office for payment. This apportionment, in the amount of $150,000,000 is made from the state General Fund pursuant to Section 138 (Chapter 44 of the Statutes of 2021) as amended by Education finance: education omnibus budget trailer bill, Senate Bill 167.
The Kitchen Infrastructure and Training (KIT) funds are to be used for kitchen infrastructure upgrades and food service staff training. School kitchen upgrades must increase access to, or improve the quality of, fresh and nutritious school meals. Local educational agencies (LEA) should consider using these funds when planning for the implementation of California’s Universal Meals Program. Food service staff training provided through these funds must focus on promoting nutritious foods, which may include food preparation, healthy food marketing, or changing the school lunchroom environment.
Recipients of KIT funds will be required to report how these funds were used to improve the quality of school meals or increase participation, as well as information on food service staff training topics, number of trainings, and attendees. Reports will be due by June 30, 2023.
For more information about this apportionment, please go to the CDE web page at www.cde.ca.gov/fg/fo/r9/kitfundsresults22.asp where the letter and schedule for this apportionment are posted.
