Budget Public Inspection, Hearing, and Adoption Dates Survey
Assembly Bill 721, outlined in the School District Budgets Letter from the California Department of Education<www.cde.ca.gov/fg/ac/co/distnotifletter.asp>, has introduced updates to the public notification process for adopted budget hearings. Under these new guidelines, each school district is required to publish a legal notice in a local newspaper with general circulation within the district’s area. This notice must include details such as the date(s) and location(s) where the proposed budget can be reviewed by the public, along with the date, time and location of the public hearing for the budget. These changes apply to the 2025-26 Adopted Budget process.
The notice must adhere to specific timing requirements: it must be published no earlier than 45 days before the final date of the hearing, no later than 10 days before the hearing, and at least 3 days before the proposed budget is made available for public inspection.
