New SB-95 Paid Coronavirus Sick Leave – District Action Required

California SB-95 Law Providing New Bank of COVID Supplemental Paid Sick Leave
Senate Bill 95 (SB 95) requires employers with more than 25 employees to provide up to 80 hours of COVID-related Supplemental Paid Sick Leave (SPSL) to employees from January 1, 2021 to September 30, 2021.
Public employers must provide notice to employees of their rights to use this new bank of SPSL. This notice may be provided to employees electronically, such as via email. A template notice is being created by the Department of Labor and should be available by the week of April 5, should districts choose to use it.
Public employers must also include this bank of SPSL on employees’ itemized wage statements. SBAS is prepared to provide this leave balance on the employee paystub. It will show as a separate leave balance from sick leave (SL) and vacation (VC) and will be identified as “Supp SL” on the paystub.
There are a few steps that district’s must perform in Escape in order for this new leave balance to appear on employee paystubs. Please see attached for instructions on how to set this up in Escape. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Myron Porter at ext. 5280.

SBCEO Classified School Employee of the Year Program Nominations

Dear School Business Colleagues:
It is our pleasure to invite you to submit nominations to the Santa Barbara County Education Office for the 2021 Classified School Employee of the Year (CSEY) Program. Please feel free to forward this email to others in your school district.
In 2021, it is a wonderful way for your district or charter school to recognize the dedication and skill that classified employees have brought to their work throughout the challenges of the past year. The program has some exciting changes this year to align it with the new Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE<www2.ed.gov/programs/rise/index.html>) Award introduced by the U.S. Department of Education in 2020. The scope of CSEY has been expanded, and we now have the opportunity to recognize up to nine employees as Classified School Employees of the Year in Santa Barbara County — one each in the categories of:
1. Paraprofessional 2. Clerical and Administrative Services 3. Transportation Services 4. Food and Nutrition Services 5. Custodial and Maintenance Services 6. Security Services 7. Health and Student Services 8. Technical Services 9. Skilled Trades
We encourage you to submit a nomination from your district or charter school in each category relevant to your operations. If your district or school has not already done so, you may want to consider establishing an internal process for nomination and selection to celebrate your staff at the district or school level. Another important change is that the longstanding requirement for three letters of recommendation has been eliminated. Only a single nomination document is now required for each nominee, describing their merit in the areas of work performance, school and community involvement, and other criteria.
Attached are:
1. nomination form in fillable PDF format, including instructions for the required documentation 2. timeline for this year’s program 3. list of CSEY honorees in recent years.
Once selections are made, 2021 recipients as well as 2020 awardees will be recognized at a Santa Barbara County Board of Education meeting (likely to be a virtual event), and the 2021 nomination materials will be forwarded to the CDE to be considered for recognition at the state level. Statewide CSEY awardees are eligible to be nominated to become a national RISE recipient.
For each employee you wish to nominate, please submit:
1. the completed nomination form (attached) in fillable PDF format 2. the required supplemental documentation (one document only) in Microsoft Word format
by email no later than Friday, April 9, 2021 to:
Tracie Cordero, tcordero@sbceo.org<mailto:tcordero@sbceo.org> Classified Human Resources Specialist, (805) 964-4710, ext. 5212
or
Amy Ramos, aramos@sbceo.org<mailto:aramos@sbceo.org> Director of Human Resources, <mailto:aramos@sbceo.org> (805) 450-1702
If you have questions, please contact Tracie or Amy above.
Detailed nomination instructions are available here<www.cde.ca.gov/ta/sr/cl/> on the CDE website.
Please note that district nominations must be submitted to SBCEO; nominations submitted directly to the CDE will not be processed.
